I have a confession to make. Growing up, I almost always liked the bad guys more than the good guys. Why? Because the bad guys looked so much cooler!
Darth Vader? Way cooler looking (and sounding) than Luke, sorry. Darth Maul? Off the charts cool-looking! The Shredder, Shere Khan, Scar, Sauron, Venom, Voldemort, Ratigan, Captain Hook? I rest my case. One of the reasons Batman is my favorite is because he’s one of the few cool-looking good guys! Here’s the point: evil entices us because it wears cooler uniforms.
Eve longed for the forbidden tree because it was “a delight to the eyes.” (Gen. 3:6). Goliath wore a bronze helmet with scale armor and a javelin slung between his shoulders (1 Samuel 17:5-6).
Solomon warned his son about the adulterous woman “dressed as a harlot” who “spreads her couch with coverings, with covered linens of Egypt (Prov. 7:10,16). The apostle John warned us against “the lust of the eyes.” (2:16).
Satan knows how to make evil look attractive. In fact, he makes evil look far more attractive than good! In school, aren’t the “cool” kids the ones who drink, party, fornicate, and disobey authority? In life, aren’t the most physically attractive people (think celebrity world) often the most spiritually dangerous?
The devil can don tailored suits, slicked back hair, and intoxicating cologne. The devil can use a cool voice, a hip personality, and a fun, free spirit to do his work. The antidote?
- Don’t be fooled! We have to look beyond physical appearance to the spiritual reality. There’s a word in Proverbs for those hypnotized by Satan’s cool uniforms: naive.
- Read Scripture. A lot. It helps us us see the world through God’s eyes. “God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7).
- Delight yourself in goodness. When we love what’s good and hate what’s evil, Satan’s attempts to allure us with a cool look simply won’t work. “Give me your heart, my son, and let your eyes delight in my ways.” (Prov. 23:26)
Can you think of other ways Satan makes evil look cool?
[For anyone wondering, that’s a picture of Shere Khan from the Jungle Book remake. Is he cool looking or what?]
